Freedom
~
As part of recognizing the
sacredness of all life, and the
connectedness of each of us to the other, one recognizes a known truth,
that if one of us is hurting, we are all hurting. It is in an
acknowledgment of this that it seems appropriate to bring into our
commentary the fact that in this mellenium of "enlightenment" there are
still 27 million humans held in the bonds of slavery, defined as unpaid
labor under threat of violence without the choice to walk away.
I live in the US, was born here and lived here all my life. I take a
certain amount of freedom quite for granted, as do all my fellow
citizens. I suspect that if someone were to try to force me to choose death or working for them I would probably choose to die. But, we cannot
know that about ourselves until faced with that choice. We can,
however, help to free others so that they too can take freedom for
granted.
There is a professor whose studies of this phenomenon have brought him
to some salient conclusions that may indeed eliminate this horror and
could do so in only 25 years. Dr. Kevin Bales
has written a book entitled Disposable
People: New Slavery in the Global Economy. He has also
founded an organization here in the US with a web presence where you
can learn the facts from him, Free
the Slaves. Please take
the time to see what he has to say,
and help to bring about individual freedom for all.
